Can you recall the science fiction adventure film series " The Back to the Future " where we witness a flying car to and fro through the Time slots in the Time Machine .The same has been witnessed in UK when "The Terrafugia Transition" ( a roadable aircraft) - the nearest thing to a flying car yet built has made its first test flight on 7th July 2011.The "Terrafugia" is a Latin word meaning "escape from land."It is said that this flying car is just like a little Transformer and has a size that can fit into any standard size garage .
Terrafugia (terra-FOO-gee-ah), based in Woburn, MA, is small aerospace company founded by pilot/engineers from MIT and supported by a world-class network of advisors and private investors. The Terrafugia Transition as they have named its flying car runs perfectly on the road with the top speed of about 65mph (a range of 500 miles on a tank of fuel) and can transform itself into a aircraft within 15 seconds by unfolding its wings travelling upto 115mph. Amazing is'nt it ? This advance in travelling by air is awaiting its approval by the US authorities and if approved this flying car would be a regular use in Britain withing five years.
Specifications as from the above video:
The transition of car has evolved to be a next step of generation of Transport by car .The Transition uses 100 HP Rotax 912 S Engine which powers either the propeller in the air or the wheels on the ground continuously helps in variable transition .Its balanced weight distribution and its Aero Dynaminc Down Force provides a stable and smooth ride on the ground .And the custom designed Airfoil maintains flight performance while allowing the wings to fold while driving. The Transition is fueled by Super aeronautic gas which is cheaper and more environmentally friendly than aviation fuel . The FAA allowing additional 110lbs of Maximum takeoff weight helps in adding the safety features that the cars have without compromising the safety of an aircraft .The beauty of this Transition is that it also provides safety while flying even during bad weather with the help of GPS finding the nearest airport to land .If all else fail, the driver can pull a handle which releases a parachute which helps the Transition to land safely on the ground .The Transition marks a wonderful transport as when compared to other light weight aircraft existing today.
